Former US treasury secretary Larry Summers is departing from the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of electronic messages between him and notorious criminal the disgraced billionaire became widely known.

The economist stated in a release that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the promise of the enterprise, and anticipate observing their advancement".

The former Harvard president, who once led Harvard University, announced on recently that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Epstein.

Digital Correspondence

The recently released messages showed that the official corresponded with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for alleged human trafficking of young people.

In another announcement, the technology organization expressed it accepted the economist's decision to resign.

"We value his numerous inputs and the insight he offered to the directors," the company commented.

Political Context

This announcement follows after the entire Congress of Congress voted on Tuesday to approve a bill that would mandate the Department of Justice to make public its files on the case.

The measure will afterward move to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following pressure from his followers.

A batch of Epstein-connected messages made public by the Congressional committee days ago included several prominent individuals in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with the billionaire often trying to introduce the academic to notable world leaders.

After the correspondence were shared with the public, Summers expressed he assumed "total ownership for my ill-advised decision to persist in communicating with Mr Epstein".

He continued that he desired "to restore faith and mend connections with the individuals most important to me".

Professional History

Summers occupied leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as economic leader under President Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He presided over the university from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When announcing his step-down from public duties previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Additional Consequences

Following Summers' announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal policy institute in DC where the professor was a researcher, verified that Summers was not affiliated with the institution.

Summers became part of the leadership of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
